Time’s Square Ball Drop, New Year’s Eve, New York

Ringing in the New Year, 2015, in New York was amazing. The infamous Ball Drop has to be the place to be in Manhattan on New Year’s Eve. It can be slightly overwhelming trying to figure out the logistics of being in the heart of it all. One million people packed into Time’s Square last year and it can only be described as organised chaos.

It’s free to stand in Time’s Square but it does comes at a price. It’s absolutely freezing and once you enter a designated standing area, you can’t really leave and if you do, you won’t be allowed back in. People start standing from the early hours, as once Time’s Square is full, all the side roads leading up to Time’s Square are closed to traffic and pedestrians. Security is high and unless you have tickets for an event in the area or are staying in a hotel within the road blocks you will have to come into the area quite early to join in the party. The advantage of booking a party or restaurant in Time’s Square, most will have a designated standing area which you can join just before midnight to catch the Ball drop. There is something for everyone, with parties at Madame Tussaud’s or even Dave & Busters Arcade.

Staying in the boutique Hotel Mela, makes a good base for getting back from New Year’s Eve. Although you won’t see the Ball Drop from the hotel it get’s you into the Time’s Square area and is just a block from all the action. You will get to see the illuminated Ball slowly descending over the course of the day and see the crowds start building up.

The 2015 celebrations were sponsored by Covergirl and saw pink balloons and pink hats being given to the crowds. The entertainment started in the early evening in the run up to midnight.

The atmosphere was electric. At midnight, as the ball drops, fireworks fly and a flurry of colourful confetti falls from the sky like snow. It is quite magical, and if you are looking for somewhere to spend New Year’s Eve this year, we highly recommend New York City.
